Original Hideaways is a bespoke retreat destination tucked deep within a peaceful valley in rural Mid Wales, offering ten acres of private land surrounded by a further 150 acres of family-farmed countryside. It is a place created for makers, creators, thinkers and seekers, somewhere to step away from the noise of daily life and reconnect with the land, with your craft and with each other. Designed for adventure, artistic and wellbeing retreats, holistic workshops, location shoots and intimate corporate gatherings, the site brings together beautifully restored heritage buildings, state-of-the-art facilities and immersive natural landscapes. The Welsh-crafted wood-fired sauna rests beside the river, fuelled entirely by fallen timber collected from the land, and accompanied by an invigorating outdoor shower for cold-water immersion.
With distinct properties – the Grain Loft event space, the Mill House & Piggeries, and the Hay Barn, Original Hideaways can host full-site residential retreats for up to twenty overnight guests or accommodate day workshops in its striking event space. Every space has been crafted with an emphasis on sustainability, local materials and sensitive renovation, creating a soulful, grounding environment where creativity and wellbeing can flourish.
The interiors of Original Hideaways have been carefully restored to honour the agricultural past of the site while introducing the highest quality craftsmanship and modern comforts. At its heart sits the Grain Loft, the dedicated event and workshop space that forms the creative centrepiece of the retreat. With its soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling picture windows and terrace overlooking the meadow, it offers a bright, flexible environment ideal for movement sessions, craft workshops, wellbeing practices or corporate training days. A fully equipped kitchen, outdoor Argentinian grill, private studio office and upstairs breakout area enhance its versatility, allowing the space to adapt seamlessly to the needs of each event.
The Mill House, a 200-year-old former grain mill, retains its original cogs and grindstones, which now sit proudly as sculptural reminders of its working heritage. This property features five double en-suite bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and two inviting living areas that sit either side of a double-sided wood burner. The deep sofas, soft lighting and historical details create an atmosphere that is warm, nurturing and unmistakably unique, while outside, a wood-fired hot tub offers a peaceful spot to unwind and soak up the surroundings.
Accessed via a walkway from the Mill House is The Piggeries. Once home to the farm’s horses, pigs and sheep, now serves as a beautifully atmospheric dining and social space. Its brick-lined walls, stone floor, large wood-burning stove and cosy bar make every mealtime feel memorable. It also houses a dedicated treatment room, complete with massage table and towels, offering a peaceful setting for therapies and holistic practices.
Adjacently, the Hay Barn offers elevated views across the meadow fields, river and the surrounding hills. Its oak-framed structure holds five double en-suite bedrooms, two on the upper floor and three at ground level, complemented by a fully equipped kitchen and an open-plan living space arranged around a wood burner. The large picture window brings the outside in, offering guests a serene place to read, rest or reflect. The experience is completed by a wood-fired hot tub, set outside for moments of quiet relaxation.
The landscape surrounding Original Hideaways has been designed to nurture both creativity and calm. The ten acres of private land include gravel gardens that act as quiet elemental spaces for reflection, a meditation circle tucked among the trees, a fire pit for evenings beneath the vast, star-filled Welsh skies and a generous yoga terrace that overlooks the ancient hills. Woodland paths meander gently through untouched areas of conservation land, guiding guests past native flora, rewilded spaces and the tranquil flow of the River Trannon. An apothecary garden just outside the Mill House provides herbs and plants for tinctures and natural remedies, while the Argentine grill area beside the Grain Loft offers an inspiring setting for communal alfresco dining. Resident Shropshire sheep, pygmy goats and Kunekune pigs bring lightness, warmth and a sense of life to the surroundings, further connecting guests to the rhythms of the land.
Original Hideaways sits just outside the village of Trefeglwys, between Llanidloes and Machynlleth, in a breathtaking mountainous region steeped in ancient Welsh history. The surrounding landscape offers endless opportunities for exploration, from the forest trails and waterfalls of Hafren Forest to the Source of the Severn and Source of the Wye. The slopes of Plynlimon, the highest peak in Mid Wales, invite hikers in search of panoramic views, while the Cambrian Mountains offer rugged ridges, peaceful valleys and wide-open skies. Nearby beauty spots such as Devils Bridge Waterfalls, Llyn Clywedog Reservoir and Dam and the coastal village of Aberdyfi (also known as Aberdovey) provide striking contrasts of forest, river, lake and sea. Whether guests wish to immerse themselves in nature, take guided woodland walks, capture dramatic landscape photography or simply wander through quiet Welsh villages, the area surrounding Original Hideaways is rich with natural and cultural treasures.
“Wow just wow, is the first thought I had while on the tour. The venue is jaw-dropping amazing. More than anything I was struck by the setting, the location and Mother Nature. It really is a special hideaway.”
