On an organic family farm in rural Essex, the Browning Brothers have created two luxury lakeside hideaways, Secret Escapes, to share the beauty and serenity of the idyllic land on which they grew up. The intention is connection – with nature, the seasons, and with yourselves.
There are two handsome hideaways to choose from. Water Lily Lodge which sleeps up to six, while Kingfisher’s Nest is an indulgent space for couples to find each other. Both have hot tubs overlooking the lake, wood burners and everything you need for wild living in supreme comfort. Dogs are welcome to join you for a small fee, the worst part is that none of you will want to leave!

Inside
Truly perfect for a romantic retreat, far from the demands of everyday life, Kingfisher’s Nest blends modern luxury and style with a deeply restful hideaway feel. The interior has been decorated by a lover of unadulterated natural materials, subtle textures and minimalist style. The ample glass frontage allows guests to fully embrace indoor/outdoor living.
Cook up a romantic meal in the stylish, fully equipped kitchen and then curl up in front of the fire and simply relax, surrounded by the tranquillity of lakeside subtlety. The bedroom in Kingfisher’s Nest is simply divine, featuring a sumptuous king size bed and luxurious linens. The bathtub in the bedroom that overlooks the lake is a unique place to take morning coffee and soak in the serenity.
Water Lily Lodge suits families or small groups. A storybook waterside dwelling reminiscent of a North American hunting cabin. Water Lily Lodge has charm and the sense of escape in abundance. If you’re bringing children, this is the place to read Swallows and Amazons or Huckleberry Finn by the fire. After an action packed day tuck your little ones into their nests so you can enjoy a glass of bubbly and a moment of silence. Or, if travelling with friends, play some fun games and make new memories around the dining room table. Water Lily Lodge also has a charming fully equipped kitchen and a spacious bathroom with a shower.
Outside
The gorgeous lakeside cabins at Browning Bros Secret Escapes both come with private hot tubs. Kingfishers Nest also has the added luxury of a sauna. In those warmer months, enjoy sitting outside and cooking up some delicious food on the BBQ.
It’s easy to become resident on your private jetty, watching the natural world dawdle and flow, but wander around the lakeside and you’ll find fishermen tucked away, enjoying a spot of carp fishing. Beyond the lake there are 20 acres of ancient woodlands and dappled orchards to explore before having a picnic lunch or dining al fresco back on your jetty. Both of these lakeside cabins have ample parking space.

Browning Bros Secret Escapes is located on a tranquil farm near Colchester, Essex. If you can pull yourself away from your cosy lakeside nest, there is plenty to do nearby. Central London is only an hour away from nearby Marks Tey railway station, so perfect for those who enjoy a day of shopping or exploring exhibitions but then need to retreat from the hustle and bustle to the quiet of the country.
If travelling as a family, a day at Colchester zoo is a must! Home to 180 species and sixty acres of parkland. Or, plan a visit to Markshall Estate and explore ancient woodland and learn about the importance of conservation work. Other activities and places to visit nearby include: Colchester Leisure World, Colchester Castle and Ardleigh Reservoir. For the lovers of sand, sea and fresh air, we would recommend a visit to Frinton-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea.
We understand, you’re on holiday so maybe you don’t fancy doing the dishes! There are a delightful collection of restaurants and pubs to try nearby. For fine dining, visit The Barn Brasserie, a family owned brasserie in a gorgeous 16th century barn. Foragers Retreat also serves up some incredible meals using imaginative recipes and locally sourced products. You may care to sample the oysters with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc at The Oyster Bar.
