In The Vale
In The Vale
Amid the famously spectacular scenery of the Lake District, and only seven minutes outside Keswick. In The Vale describes itself as ‘like a tiny herd of cabins grouped like a family of deer… watched over by Blencathra and Helvellyn’.
This is a special place created by a family sharing their deep connection to the land and its beauty, which they appreciate so poetically. Rearing their little herd of cabins has clearly been a labour of love and an honouring of their ancestral landscape. Using materials and ingredients sourced and reclaimed from the farm and from the Lake District, the sons and daughter of the family have hand crafted your holiday. Their three cabins are adult-only bespoke boltholes for two, where in the penetrating heat of your wood fired tub, overlooked by mountain wilderness, you will find your oh-so comfortable place in nature.
Inside
The three cabins are each unique, designed and constructed by the eldest son of the family. With windows and doors positioned to frame your private slice of Lake District grandeur. They are perfectly formed little homes, rich with charm. All you need for a romantic getaway for two or a well-earned restorative break has been lovingly crafted into these solid little hideaways. Each has a deeply comfortable king size bed and crisp linens, cosy throws and, the larger of the three ‘The Stag’ also has a plump sofa from which to take tea or bedtime cocoa. Lose yourself in a good book, the mountain views or the flames of the log burner; your little kitchen close at hand for top ups.
Cool or cosy whatever the weather, there is electric heating, as well as your stove, and doors opening out onto your deck so you can let the fresh mountain air breeze in.. There is a flushing toilet and shower in your bathroom, with toiletries by Pure Lakes. And on arrival, you will find treats home baked by the daughter of the family. At every stage your hosts take pride in making the ingredients for your experience authentic and local.
Outside
Step out onto your private deck at sunrise to see the light clipping the mountain tops while sipping a coffee, ground by Carvetti at the foot of Blencathra. Or pop on a cosy robe and tiptoe over to your private hot tub or hot bath for a morning steep in luxury beneath the sky. Lazy days can unfold in the tranquillity of life on the farm, where you’re invited to slow to the pace of the ambling flocks and herds in the fields around you. During the summer months you are welcome to harvest your own potatoes and enjoy the freshest potato salad or frittata ever! Get some local meats sizzling on the barbeque or warm yourself around the fire pit come evening, with ‘home-grown logs’ delivered by the farm’s youngest son.
Nearby
Further afield from the little herd of cabins, you are free to roam around the working farm. Take a walk to one of two nearby rivers for a refreshing spot of wild swimming. When soaking in the serenity has restored your vim and vigour, venture beyond the farm gates – you are surrounded by all the best the Lake District has to offer. An abundance of traditional Lakes pursuits awaits; watersports, boat tours and mountain sports, tea rooms and idyllic picnics.
Take on England’s third highest mountain, Helvellyn, for a new perspective on your impressive neighbour. Your hosts recommend a selection of the famous walks locally, or for some new breed activities such as quad biking and alpaca walking head to Linghome Kitchen and Walled Garden, where breakfast or brunch come highly recommended. Honister Slate Mine is the place for adrenaline junkies, with zipwire, infinity bridge and mine tours. Don’t forget to visit Keswick Market to pick up some local fayre before you head home. Or Lakes Distillery, where you may find something delicious and warming to sip beside your fire.
